Dash Cam With Buffered Parking Mode
What buffered parking mode records that motion-only and time-lapse modes miss, the cams we track that have it, and how to power it.
A dash cam with buffered parking mode keeps a short loop of video rolling in memory while the car is parked, and when a bump or motion triggers it, the saved clip includes the seconds before the event. The clip shows the other car arriving, not only the dent it left.
Buffered vs motion-only vs time-lapse
- Buffered: records continuously to memory and writes the pre-event seconds when triggered, so you see the approach.
- Motion or impact only: the camera sleeps until something wakes it, and you can lose the first second of the event.
- Time-lapse: saves card space, but can miss the lead-up.
- Energy-saving: Thinkware’s mode sleeps between events to stretch parking time.
The longer explanation is in what dash cam parking mode means.

2-channel · BlackVueBlackVue DR970X-2CH$305-650See price comparison →
Continuous and event-based parking modes with buffered pre-recording, 4K front and 1080p rear, and a supercapacitor. With LTE it can alert you while parked.
Why buffered mode needs constant power
Buffered recording never fully sleeps, so the camera needs power the whole time the car is off. A 12V socket that switches off with the ignition cannot supply it.
You need a hardwire kit to the fuse box or a dedicated dash cam battery pack; do you have to hardwire a dash cam walks through both.
Battery drain and cutoff settings
Set the hardwire kit’s low-voltage cutoff so the camera shuts down before the starter battery gets weak. If the car sits for days, a higher cutoff or a battery pack is the safer setup.
Will parking mode drain your battery covers the settings in detail.
Who should skip this
If the car lives in a locked garage, buffered parking mode adds wiring for little gain. It is built for street parkers and anyone who leaves the car in a busy lot all day.
A dash cam with buffered parking mode is only as good as its power supply: wire it properly, and the clip shows the approach, not just the damage.
