How the drain actually happens
A dash cam in parking mode draws a small, steady current — usually well under half an amp. On its own, that’s tiny. The danger is time and temperature. Leave a camera pulling power for three days in a cold garage on an already-weak battery, and it can pull the voltage low enough that the car won’t start.
The camera isn’t the villain. An unprotected install on a tired battery is.
The low-voltage cutoff is the whole game
Every proper hardwire kit includes a low-voltage cutoff. You set a floor — commonly 11.8V or 12.0V for a standard lead-acid battery — and the kit shuts the camera off the moment voltage hits it. Your starting battery is protected by design. The camera just stops before it can do any harm.
How to set it:
- Healthy, newer battery: 11.8V cutoff — you can leave parking mode on overnight, no problem.
- Older or smaller battery: bump it to 12.0–12.2V to be safe.
- Daily driver: a 20–30 minute drive easily recharges what an overnight park consumes.
When a battery pack is the better call
A low-voltage cutoff protects your battery by turning the camera off — which means on a long park, you eventually lose coverage. If you regularly leave the car for multiple days, or you drive an EV whose 12V system you’d rather not lean on, a dedicated dash cam battery pack is the move. It runs parking mode for 24–48 hours with zero draw from the car.

A dash cam will not strand you if it’s hardwired with a low-voltage cutoff and your battery is healthy. Skip the cutoff — or run it off an always-live socket with no protection — and it can.
