Hardwire Kit vs Cigarette Lighter: Do You Have to Hardwire a Dash Cam?

The short answer

Do you have to hardwire a dash cam? For driving-only recording: no. Plug into the 12V socket and go.

For parking mode: almost always yes. Here’s why.

Why the 12V socket isn’t enough for parking mode

In most cars, the cigarette-lighter socket dies the moment you switch off the ignition. No power = no parking mode. The camera shuts off with the car.

A few vehicles keep the socket live all the time — which creates the opposite problem: the camera runs until it drains your battery flat, because nothing ever tells it to stop.

A hardwire dash cam kit solves both. It taps straight into your fuse box and gives you two things a plug never can:

• Constant power through a circuit that stays live when parked, so parking mode actually runs.
• A low-voltage cutoff that shuts the camera off before it can drain your starting battery.

What hardwiring actually involves

A hardwire kit is a cable that runs from the camera, tucked along the headliner and down the A-pillar, to two fuse-box taps (constant and switched) plus a ground bolt. The tools: a fuse-tap tool and a cheap multimeter.

Most people describe it as a 30–60 minute DIY job. Not comfortable with the fuse panel? Any installer can knock it out in an hour. Bonus: it cleans up the install — no cable hanging loose from a socket, no dangling cord across the dash.

The alternative: a dedicated battery pack

Can’t or won’t hardwire? A dash cam battery pack charges while you drive and powers the camera while parked — completely isolated from your car’s starting battery.

• It costs more upfront and takes a bit of trunk space.
• It’s the safest option for vehicles where hardwiring is awkward (some EVs, leased cars, etc.).
• Parking mode runs for 24–48 hours with zero draw from the car.

So, do you actually need it?

• Driving-only protection → 12V plug is completely fine.
• Parking mode → hardwire kit or battery pack, every time.
