Dash Cam for Pickup Truck

Front and rear kits, mirror cams for a blocked back window, and parking mode for a truck that sleeps outside.

dash cam for pickup truck

A dash cam for pickup truck duty has to handle three things a sedan never asks about: a rear camera well behind the driver, a back window that a rack, toolbox or trailer can block, and a truck that often parks outside overnight. For most half-tons that means a front and rear kit with hardwired parking mode, or a mirror cam when the rear view is already compromised.

Our shortlist, with pricing on each product page:

Front and rear kit or a mirror cam

A front and rear kit leaves your factory mirror alone and adds a camera for the road behind.

A mirror cam replaces the reflection in your rearview mirror with a camera feed. When a cap, a load or a trailer hides the back glass, the mirror still shows what is behind you.

Where the rear camera goes on a pickup

Most kits stick the rear camera to the inside of the back glass. That works until a headache rack or a tall load covers it.

If the glass is often blocked, pick a kit with a waterproof rear camera that can mount outside. On a crew cab, measure the cable route to the rear camera and compare it with the length on the listing.

Parking mode for a truck that sleeps outside

A truck left at a job site or on the street is when scrapes and break-ins happen. Parking mode needs constant power, which means a hardwire kit with a low-voltage cutoff rather than the 12V socket; see do you have to hardwire a dash cam.

Which one we would put in a half-ton

For an open bed and a clear back window, the A229 Pro. For a truck that tows or wears a cap, the G900 Pro, because the mirror keeps showing the road when the glass does not. More on that category in our mirror dash cam guide.

Skip all of this if the truck runs daytime errands and sleeps in a garage; a front-only camera covers that. The front and rear dash cam guide explains when a second channel earns its place.

A dash cam for pickup truck owners comes down to the rear view: keep it clear and a front and rear kit does the job, lose it and a mirror cam brings it back.
