Is a dash cam worth it? It’s the right question to ask before spending the money. The honest answer: for most drivers, yes — not because it lowers your insurance (in the US, it usually doesn’t), but because it solves one problem that’s otherwise almost impossible to fix.

• Fault, settled. In a he-said-she-said collision, footage is the deciding evidence. That’s the core value — everything else is a bonus.

The honest caveats

• It probably won’t lower your insurance. US insurers generally don’t offer a discount for dash cams; treat it as at-fault protection, not a premium cut. (The UK is a different story.)

• Daily commuter, financed car, street parking → yes, no question

• Garage-kept weekend car you rarely drive → optional, but still a cheap form of protection

Bottom line

For the price of a tank or two of gas, a dash cam turns “my word against theirs” into evidence. That’s the whole value.
