Is a Dash Cam Worth It?

The stats-backed case — not because it cuts your insurance, but because it settles the one thing that's otherwise impossible to prove.

The honest case — no hype

Is a dash cam worth it? It’s the right question to ask before spending the money. The honest answer: for most drivers, yes — not because it lowers your insurance (in the US, it usually doesn’t), but because it solves one problem that’s otherwise almost impossible to fix.

It proves what happened.

What a dash cam actually buys you

  • Fault, settled. In a he-said-she-said collision, footage is the deciding evidence. That’s the core value — everything else is a bonus.
  • Hit-and-run protection. Hit-and-run crashes just hit a record high: about 15% of all crashes now involve a driver who flees (AAA Foundation, 2026). With parking mode, your camera is the only witness that stays on duty.
  • Insurance fraud defense. Staged brake-checks and false claims fall apart instantly on video.
  • Parking lot incidents. Door dings and lot hit-and-runs are caught only by a camera watching while you’re gone.

You’re in good company: roughly 30% of US drivers — about 69 million people — already run a dash cam, and another third say they plan to within a year.

The honest caveats

  • It probably won’t lower your insurance. US insurers generally don’t offer a discount for dash cams; treat it as at-fault protection, not a premium cut. (The UK is a different story.)
  • It won’t read every plate — especially at night. Here’s why.
  • It needs the right setup — a good high-endurance SD card and, for parking mode, a proper hardwire install.

So — worth it?

  • Daily commuter, financed car, street parking → yes, no question
  • Rideshare or a new driver in the family → absolutely
  • Garage-kept weekend car you rarely drive → optional, but still a cheap form of protection

Bottom line

For the price of a tank or two of gas, a dash cam turns “my word against theirs” into evidence. That’s the whole value.
