Thinkware U1000 vs U3000

Two 4K Thinkware cams a generation apart: what the U3000's radar parking mode adds and how to read the prices on both.

Published
thinkware u1000 vs u3000

Thinkware U1000 vs U3000 is a choice between two two-channel 4K cameras from the same brand, one a generation older than the other. The U3000 is the one we recommend for parking surveillance, with radar motion detection and Sony STARVIS 2 sensors; the U1000 is the older 4K unit that still turns up in listings, sometimes at a higher price.

What changed from the U1000 to the U3000

Both pair a 4K front camera with a QHD (2K) rear camera. The listings we track for the U3000 name STARVIS 2, GPS, Wi-Fi and radar; the U1000 listings name 4K, Wi-Fi and driver-assistance alerts.

Thinkware also sells a U3000 Pro, which is a separate model. This page covers the standard U3000, so a listing that says Pro is the other camera.

Radar parking mode on the U3000

The U3000 uses a radar sensor to wake the camera when something moves nearby, which cuts false triggers and saves card space. It also offers buffered motion and impact recording in certain parking modes, plus energy-saving and time-lapse settings.

That parking setup is why the U3000 leads our parking mode guide.

Cloud and LTE on the U3000

An optional LTE module adds cloud alerts when someone bumps the car while you are away. Cloud needs a data plan, and the trade-offs are in dash cams with cloud storage.

Night video: what the listings tell you

Sensor quality decides more at night than resolution does. The U3000 listings name Sony’s STARVIS 2 sensors; the U1000 listings we track do not name a sensor, so ask the seller before you assume it matches.

Which one to buy in 2026

Buy the U3000 if the car parks on the street or in a busy lot; the radar and buffered parking modes are what you are paying for. Buy the U1000 only if you find it clearly below the U3000 and mostly want driving footage.

Skip both if you do not need parking surveillance. A two-channel Viofo or Vantrue covers daily driving, and our Viofo vs BlackVue vs Thinkware comparison lays out where each brand fits.

Thinkware U1000 vs U3000 is a parking question first: if the car sits outside, the U3000’s radar is the reason to choose it.
